Sophie was ravenous, but it hurt to chew so she took it slowly. Once he had returned home with their evening fare and a box of powdered eggs and a loaf of coarse bread for the morning, Simon had shrugged out of his jacket and trench and rolled up his sleeves. She could make out the sinewy muscles in his forearms.
He was stronger than people first thought on account of the pinstripes and carefully tailored lean suits he wore. His ebony hair fell over his forehead a little, and he had loosened his tie and collar. He had even taken his shoes off but kept his glasses on. It was endearing. Gold-rimmed armor.
She tucked her stockinged feet under her and watched him casually inspect a chip before he popped it in his mouth. She was one of the few people who would ever see Simon unguarded: without his walls up.
âI bet no chippy shop has ever seen to the sustenance of a resident of this grand house.â She let down her guard a moment. âI feel safe here.â
Simon rotated the cuff link on his left sleeve. âYou could use a bit of safe, I fancy.â
It was funny how his face came to her mind just at the moment when she had been found out. She had reported to the Baker Street Irregulars when approached by a man affiliated with Marcus Brighton: whose name was familiar to Sophie from her youth. She had begun training and was even certain that a mission in France would find her finally able to accomplish something worthwhile.
It had been a routine training exercise with an important objective. She would courier documents to a gentleman disembarking at Paddington Stationâa known agent rumored to be smuggling integral documents on German surveillance of British railways.
But when she arrived, the agent recognized her from the society papers. His cohort roughed her up and took the folder she had tucked under her arm. Her cover was blown. And her supervisor recognized that a Huntington-Villiers who couldnât even undergo a routine handoff at Paddington would be killed the moment she set foot in France.
The cohort had threatened to break her fingers.
Now, she fanned them out on the table. And for a moment she knew she had been close to spilling all the kingâs secrets. It was one thing to do your bit for the war effort, quite another to imagine never playing the Appassionata again.
When she looked up, she saw Simonâs eyes glistening with worry.
And she didnât truly have a chance to be tested.
Were other young ladies like herself set up to believe they were primed for encountering danger and glory but never truly released into the fray?
When she closed her eyes and imagined her failure against the contrast of her life at Ashton, at the prospect of turning a tide in the war, she thrilled with it. Which was why the fall back to earth hit so hard.
She was Sophia Huntington-Villiers and she didnât deliver her message or get to France.
